  • The calculation is for a permanent employee, single with no dependants (TK/0), working the full year. Monthly tax is withheld at the simplified TER rates, and the annual total is settled in December to match this result.
  • We used the pension wage cap of 11,086,300 rupiah a month for the whole year; it was slightly lower in January and February 2026, and the difference is a few thousand rupiah.
  • We have not applied the temporary government-borne wage tax relief (PPh 21 DTP), which in 2025 covered workers in some sectors earning up to 10 million rupiah a month, because we have not confirmed its conditions for 2026.
  • Irregular allowances and the religious holiday bonus (THR) increase the annual tax and are not included here.

Moving from Indonesia to the UAE: what changes

  • On $3,000 a month you gain about $621 a month after the move ($7,450 a year), because the deduction rate falls from 20.7% to 0.1%.
  • On $10,000 a month, each extra dollar of a raise loses 0% in the UAE instead of 30% in Indonesia, so pay rises are worth more after the move.
  • VAT falls from 12% to 5%: spending $1,000 a month on standard-rated goods costs about $62 less each month.
  • You gain a legal right to an end-of-service gratuity in the UAE (about $7,350 after 5 years on $3,000 a month), which no general scheme provides in Indonesia.
  • Gains on shares: not taxed in the UAE, against up to 35% in Indonesia.
  • Dividends: not taxed in the UAE, against 10% in Indonesia.
  • Crypto gains: not taxed in the UAE; taxed in Indonesia.
  • Tax residence in the UAE: Under Cabinet Decision No. 85 of 2022 and Ministerial Decision No. 27 of 2023, an individual is tax resident if any one of three conditions is met: physical presence in the country for 183 days or more in any 12 consecutive months; or 90 days or more in any 12 consecutive months while holding UAE nationality, a valid residence permit or the nationality of a GCC state, provided they have a permanent place of residence or carry on employment or a business in the country; or if their usual or primary place of residence and their centre of financial and personal interests are both in the UAE. Any part of a day counts as a full day, and the days do not need to be consecutive. You may also stay tax resident in Indonesia if you do not end your residence there. Count your days.
  • If you work remotely for an employer abroad, the UAE offers a remote work visa (virtual residence). Requirement: monthly income of at least 3,500 US dollars or the equivalent, with proof of employment with an employer outside the country and valid health insurance.
