Zakat calculator 2026: zakat on savings, gold and shares
Add up what you own on your zakat date, subtract what you owe, and see whether you have reached the nisab and how much zakat is due. Where scholars differ, the calculator lets you choose the opinion you follow.
Zakat is one-fortieth (2.5%) of wealth that has reached the nisab and been held for a full lunar (hijri) year. The nisab is the value of 85 grams of pure gold (about 11,308 US dollars at the price on 4 October 2026) or 595 grams of silver (about 1,155 US dollars). Add up your cash, gold, silver, shares, trade goods and debts you expect to be repaid, subtract debts due now, and if what remains reaches the nisab, pay 2.5% of all of it.

1Cash and accounts
2Gold and silver
Only the pure gold counts: 21 carat is 87.5% gold and 18 carat is 75%. No zakat is due on gemstones unless they are held for trade.
3Shares, funds and cryptocurrency
4Pensions and long-term savings
The ratios are NZF estimates of the zakatable part of each type. No zakat is due on government social insurance pensions, because you do not own them until they are paid.
5Business and property
No zakat is due on the home you live in, or on a business's fixed assets such as equipment and premises.

8Hawl date
We work out your next hawl date in the hijri (Umm al-Qura) calendar.
How to calculate zakat step by step
- Set your hawl date: the day your wealth first reached the nisab. Keep it as a fixed date every hijri year.
- Add up your zakatable wealth on that day: cash, gold and silver kept as savings, shares, trade goods, and debts owed to you that are likely to be repaid.
- Subtract the debts you must pay now (and 12 months of instalments, for those who allow it).
- Compare what remains with the nisab: the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver at today's price.
- If it reaches the nisab, pay 2.5% of the whole amount, not only of what is above the nisab.
Worked example
On your hawl date you hold 68,000 Saudi riyals in the bank, with no other zakatable assets and no debts due. At the gold price on 4 October 2026, the gold nisab is about 42,398 Saudi riyals, so your savings have reached it. Zakat due: 68,000 × 2.5% = 1,700 Saudi riyals.
Where scholars differ and how the calculator handles it
| Question | Opinions | In the calculator |
|---|---|---|
| Nisab basis | Gold or silver. The NZF uses silver because it is better for the poor; the General Iftaa' Department in Jordan and Gulf Islamic banks use gold. | Your choice |
| Nisab weight | 85 g and 595 g is the common view in Arab countries; the NZF and Islamic Relief use 87.48 g and 612.36 g. | Your choice |
| Jewellery that is worn | Zakat is due on it in the Hanafi school and in the view of Ibn Baz; it is not due in the majority view and in the fatwas of Egypt's Dar al-Ifta. | Default: the more cautious view |
| Long-term shares | Fiqh Academy Resolution 28 and then Resolution 120 (2001): the shareholder pays zakat on the part of the company's zakatable assets that the share represents, or only on the dividends if the company has no zakatable assets. | Adjustable ratio (25% by default) |
| Debts you owe | Only debts due now, or debts due now plus 12 months of instalments on the principal, excluding interest. | Your choice |
| Year | 2.5% for a hijri year, and about 2.577% for a Gregorian year. | Your choice |

Zakat and the law in Arab countries
- Saudi Arabia: ZATCA collects 2.5% of the zakat base from licensed businesses and activities owned by Saudi and GCC nationals; for a non-hijri year the rate is adjusted by the number of days. Individuals with no commercial activity are outside the scope of the regulations.
- Sudan: zakat is compulsory under the Zakat Law of 2001 and is collected by the Zakat Chamber. It is deducted from taxable business income, not from salary income.
- Oman: the personal income tax law (from 2028) allows zakat and donations to approved bodies to be deducted up to 5% of total income.
- Jordan: the income tax law keeps the tax provisions of the Zakat Fund law and allows donations to official public institutions to be deducted without a cap.
- Other countries: zakat for individuals is voluntary, and official zakat funds and houses manage it in Kuwait, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and elsewhere.
Frequently asked questions
What is the nisab for zakat today?
At the price on 4 October 2026, the gold nisab (85 grams of 24-carat gold) is about 11,308 US dollars, and the silver nisab (595 grams) is about 1,155 US dollars. Choose your country in the calculator to see the nisab in your currency, and change the price per gram to the price on the day you pay.
Should I use the gold nisab or the silver nisab?
Both are recognised by scholars. The silver nisab is much lower, so more people owe zakat under it. Organisations such as the National Zakat Foundation (NZF) in the UK use it because it is "more cautious and better for the poor". The General Iftaa' Department in Jordan and many Islamic banks use gold. The calculator offers both.
Is the gold nisab 85 grams of 24-carat or 21-carat gold?
The common view is 85 grams of pure (24-carat) gold, which is what the General Iftaa' Department in Jordan and Gulf Islamic banks use. In Egypt, the fatwas in circulation give the nisab as 85 grams of 21-carat gold. The calculator lets you choose the carat.
Is zakat due on jewellery that is worn?
There is a well-known difference of opinion. The Hanafi school requires zakat on it, and this was the view of Sheikh Ibn Baz. Most Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali scholars do not require zakat on jewellery kept for normal wear, and Egypt's Dar al-Ifta follows this view. Choose the opinion you follow in the calculator; the default is the more cautious one (paying zakat).
How do I calculate zakat on shares?
Shares held for trading are zakatable at their full market value. For long-term shares, Resolution No. 120 of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy requires zakat on the part of the company's zakatable assets that each share represents, if it can be known; if not, an approximate ratio is used (the NZF uses 25% of market value). If the company pays zakat on behalf of its shareholders, you owe none on those shares.
Can I deduct instalments and debts?
Debts that must be paid now are deducted. Many organisations (the NZF, Islamic Relief, Emirates Islamic) also allow you to deduct the next 12 months of instalments on the principal, excluding interest. The calculator offers both rules.
Is zakat due on my salary?
No zakat is due on the salary itself when you receive it, only on what you save from it, if together with the rest of your wealth it reaches the nisab and a full lunar year passes. The practical way: set a fixed day in the hijri year, add up everything you own on that day, and pay 2.5%.
Is zakat due on property?
No zakat is due on the home you live in. Property bought to sell is zakatable at its market value every year, like trade goods. On rented property, no zakat is due on the property itself; saved rent is zakatable with your cash if it reaches the nisab and a full year passes.
Do I pay zakat on money other people owe me?
According to Resolution 1/2 of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy, a debt owed by someone able and willing to pay is zakatable every year, and a debt owed by someone unable to pay, or who keeps delaying, is zakatable after you receive it.
What is the difference between 2.5% and 2.577%?
Zakat is 2.5% for a hijri year (about 354 days). If you calculate zakat on a Gregorian year, the equivalent rate is about 2.577%, because the Gregorian year is eleven days longer. Saudi Arabia's Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) uses this formula for non-hijri years.
Is zakat for individuals required by law?
In Sudan, zakat is compulsory under the Zakat Law of 2001. In Saudi Arabia, ZATCA collects zakat from licensed businesses and activities; an individual with no commercial activity is outside the scope of the regulations. In most other countries, zakat for individuals is voluntary and is paid to official zakat funds or directly to those entitled to it.
