Employer cost calculator: what an employee really costs

Hiring, or checking what you cost your company? Enter a gross salary to see the employer's contributions on top of it and the full monthly and yearly cost.

Short answer

The real cost of an employee = the gross salary + the employer's mandatory contributions to social insurance and pensions. In the Gulf they are close to nothing for an expat and high for a national; in Europe they can add 20% to 45% on top of the salary. For example, in Saudi Arabia a gross salary of 10,000 Saudi riyals a month costs the employer 10,200 Saudi riyals for an expat and 11,175 Saudi riyals for a national.

Frequently asked questions

What does an employer pay on top of the salary?

Its share of social insurance, pensions and work injury cover, and in some countries extra payroll taxes. In the Gulf, residence fees, health insurance and the end-of-service gratuity come on top.

Why does a Gulf national cost more to employ than an expat?

Because pension contributions are compulsory for nationals and the employer pays most of them, while for an expat the employer usually contributes only to work injury cover.
