Tax residency days calculator (the 183-day rule)
Working between two countries, or about to move? Add each stay in the country to see how many days you have spent there this tax year and in the last 12 months.
Most countries treat you as tax resident if you spend 183 days or more there in the tax year, or in any 12-month period, and most count any part of a day as a full day. Enter the dates you arrived and left to see your total. For example, arriving on 1 January 2026 and leaving on 2 July 2026 is 183 days, counting both the arrival and the departure day.

How it is calculated
- Each stay counts every calendar day from arrival to departure, both days included.
- The calculator adds up the days that fall in the tax year you chose, and separately the most days in any 12 consecutive months.
- It compares the higher of the two with 183 days.
Frequently asked questions
How do I count tax residency days?
Add up the days you were in the country, including the days you arrived and left in most countries. Compare the total with 183 days in the tax year, or in any 12 consecutive months, depending on the country's law.
Is 183 days the only rule?
No. The UAE, for example, also treats you as resident after 90 days if you have a permanent home or work there, and Saudi Arabia after 30 days with a permanent home. Check the tax residency rules of each country.
