Work out the gross salary from the net

Know the take-home pay you need? Enter it to see the gross salary to ask for in your contract after income tax and social insurance.

Short answer

If you know the take-home pay you want, the gross = that take-home pay + everything that will be deducted from it. Because income tax is progressive, a fixed percentage is not enough: the calculator finds the exact gross that gives the take-home you want under the country's rules. For example, a take-home of 20,000 Egyptian pounds a month in Egypt needs a gross of about 25,536 Egyptian pounds.

In the Gulf states an expat usually has nothing deducted, so the gross equals the take-home pay; nationals pay pension contributions. Use the national option in each country's calculator to see it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out a gross salary from the net?

If you know the take-home pay you want, the gross = that take-home pay + everything that will be deducted from it. Because income tax is progressive, a fixed percentage is not enough: the calculator finds the exact gross that gives the take-home you want under the country's rules. For example, a take-home of 20,000 Egyptian pounds a month in Egypt needs a gross of about 25,536 Egyptian pounds.

Why not just add the tax rate to the net salary?

Because the rate is charged on the gross, not the net, and the bands change with the salary. Adding 20% to the net gives less than you need when 20% of the gross is deducted.
