Frequently asked questions

How do I compare my salary across several countries?

Enter the gross salary in the currency you know, then add countries. The tool converts the same amount into each currency at the official exchange rate, applies that country's tax and social insurance rules for a single expat employee, and converts the take-home pay back into your currency so the figures line up.

What does buying power mean here?

Take-home pay adjusted for each country's price level, from the World Bank. 1,000 dollars buys more in a cheap country than in an expensive one, so a country with lower take-home pay can still come out ahead.

How is my country's score out of 10 worked out?

We rank every country we cover by take-home pay on the same salary and turn the rank of the first country in your list into a score from 1 to 10. A 10 means it is among the highest for that salary.

Does it include the full cost of living?

No. It uses the World Bank's general price level and does not include rent, school fees or private health insurance.

Are Gulf nationals and expats treated the same?

No. The tool uses expat rules everywhere. In the Gulf states nationals pay pension contributions that expats do not; each country's calculator lets you switch.
