Salary equivalent calculator between two countries

Weighing an offer abroad? Enter your current gross salary and the two countries to see the gross you need in the new one to take home the same amount.

Short answer

The equivalent salary is the gross you need in the new country to keep the take-home pay you have now, after converting the currency and applying the new country's tax and social insurance. For example, a gross salary of 20,000 UAE dirhams a month in the UAE leaves 19,990 UAE dirhams take-home. To keep that in Germany you need a gross of about 8,362 euros a month, because 42% would be deducted there.

How it is calculated

  1. Your take-home pay now: your gross salary minus income tax and the employee share of social insurance in your current country.
  2. That take-home pay converted into the new currency at the exchange rate dated on each country's calculator.
  3. The gross salary in the new country whose take-home pay, after its own tax and social insurance, equals the converted amount.

It assumes a single employee whose salary is their only income, with each country's standard options.

Frequently asked questions

What salary should I ask for when moving to another country?

Work out your take-home pay now, convert it at the exchange rate, then find the gross salary that gives the same take-home pay in the new country. This tool does all three steps at once.

Does it include the difference in living costs?

No. It matches take-home pay after tax only. Add the difference in rent, schooling and health insurance yourself.
