The standard VAT rate in Yemen is 5%. To add VAT, multiply the price by 1.05; to take VAT out of a VAT-inclusive price, divide it by 1.05. Example: 1,000 Yemeni rials before VAT becomes 1,050 Yemeni rials including VAT.

Amounts in Yemeni rial (YER).

Yemen applies a general sales tax (Law 19 of 2001 and its amendments), not VAT. We could not read the 5% standard rate from the official law file because its text cannot be extracted, so it is not confirmed by a primary source.

How to add or remove VAT

  • Add VAT: price before VAT × 1.05 = price including VAT. For example, 250 becomes 262.50.
  • Remove VAT: price including VAT ÷ 1.05 = price before VAT. The difference is the VAT. For example, 525 including VAT is 500 before VAT and 25 VAT.
  • Do not take 5% off a gross price: 5% of 1,050 is 52.50, but the VAT inside it is 50.
