What the law says

30 days for each year of service, 2 days for each month if service is more than 6 months but less than a year, and leave for the fractions of the final year when service ends.

During leave the worker is entitled to full pay (the total wage, as wage is defined in Article 1). Payment for unused leave when leaving the job, and for fractions of a year, is calculated on the basic wage (Article 29, clause 9).

Public holidays that fall within annual leave count as part of it unless the contract gives the worker better terms (Article 29, clause 7), so leave is counted in calendar days. A worker may not be prevented from using a leave balance built up over more than two years, unless the worker chooses to carry it over or take a cash payment under the employer's rules. The daily divisor of 30 comes from Article 67.

Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021: Article 29 (annual leave) and Article 67 (a year is 365 days and a month is 30 days).

How the calculator works it out

  1. Daily wage = the basic monthly salary ÷ 30 = 333 AED on the example salary.
  2. Pay for unused leave = unused days × daily wage: 15 × 333 = 5,000 AED.
