Pay and hours
What the law says
Overtime pay is at least "the wage due to the worker" plus 35% during the day and 70% at night, calculated on the wage for their normal working hour (Article 121). In Article 1 the wage includes the basic wage and the variable wage (commissions, increments, grants and so on), so the total wage is used.
The worker may not be present at the workplace for more than 12 hours a day in any case (Article 121). The law sets no annual cap.
Law 14 of 2025 repealed Law 12 of 2003. It was published in Official Gazette issue 18 (supplement) on 3 May 2025 and applies from the first day of the month after 90 days from publication, that is from 1 September 2025. In the law, night is the period between sunset and sunrise. In the text, overtime is tied to unusual work needs or exceptional circumstances, with notice to the administrative authority within 7 days. Work on the weekly rest day: the equivalent of the day's wage as compensation on top of the wage (200%), plus a substitute day in the following week. Work on official holidays and feasts: the day's wage plus twice as much again (300%), or a substitute day at the worker's written request. The law does not set the number of days in a month for dividing the wage, so it gives no days divisor; dividing by 30 is the common practice but is not written in the law.
Labour Law issued by Law No. 14 of 2025: Article 1 (definitions of wage and night), Article 117 (working hours), Article 119, Article 120 (weekly rest), Article 121 (overtime), Article 129 (holidays and feasts).
How the calculator works it out
- Hourly wage = the total monthly salary ÷ 30 days ÷ 8 hours = 84.38 EGP on the example salary.
- Each overtime hour = the hourly wage × the rate for that kind of hour (day, night, rest day or public holiday).
- 20 daytime hours on a basic salary of 15,000 and a total of 20,250 EGP: 2,278 EGP.
