What the law says

Overtime pay is at least 125% of the worker's "usual wage" (Article 59). In Article 2 the wage is everything the worker is owed for their work plus all other entitlements set by the law, the contract or the internal rules, or customarily paid, except overtime pay, so the total wage is used.

Overtime requires the worker's consent (Article 59). Weekly working hours and rest breaks may be arranged so that together they do not exceed 11 hours a day (Article 56). For stocktaking, preparing accounts and preventing loss, the days may not exceed 30 a year, and actual working hours may not exceed 10 a day during stocktaking (Article 57). There is no general annual cap.

The law has no separate rate for night work. Work on the weekly day off, religious feasts or official holidays: "extra pay of not less than 150% of the usual wage" for that day (Article 59, paragraph b); we use 150% of the day's wage, though the text could be read as paid on top of the normal day's wage. Paragraph (b) was suspended for official holidays by Defence Order No. 6 of 2020, and we have not confirmed from an official source that this suspension has ended. The law does not set the number of days in a month for dividing the wage, so it gives no days divisor; dividing by 30 is the common practice but is not written in the law.

Labour Law No. 8 of 1996 as amended: Article 2 (definition of wage), Article 56 (working hours), Article 57, Article 59 (overtime and work on holidays and feasts), Article 60 (weekly day off).

How the calculator works it out

  1. Hourly wage = the total monthly salary ÷ 30 days ÷ 8 hours = 3.66 JOD on the example salary.
  2. Each overtime hour = the hourly wage × the rate for that kind of hour (day, night, rest day or public holiday).
  3. 20 daytime hours on a basic salary of 650 and a total of 878 JOD: 91.41 JOD.
