What the law says
Article 66 gives the worker overtime pay 25% above their "normal wage" for the same period. In Article 55, the wage is the basic wage plus the increments, allowances and bonuses the worker receives regularly, so the total wage is used.
2 overtime hours a day at most and 180 hours a year, and overtime may not be worked on more than 3 days a week or 90 days a year (Article 66).
The law has no separate rate for night work. Work on the weekly rest day: at least 50% of the wage on top of the original wage (150%), plus a substitute rest day (Article 67). Work on a public holiday: double pay (200%) plus a substitute day (Article 68). The ILO summary says the calculation is on the basic wage, while the text refers to the "normal wage", which includes regular allowances under Article 55; we follow the text. Article 67 says the daily wage is calculated by dividing the salary by the number of actual working days, excluding weekly rest days, so the divisor is 26 days for a 6-day working week (24 hours of rest after every 6 working days), and lower for a 5-day week.
Private Sector Labour Law No. 6 of 2010: Article 55 (definition of wage), Article 62, Article 64 (working hours), Article 66 (overtime), Article 67 (weekly rest and daily wage calculation), Article 68 (public holidays).
How the calculator works it out
- Hourly wage = the total monthly salary ÷ 26 days ÷ 8 hours = 5.19 KWD on the example salary.
- Each overtime hour = the hourly wage × the rate for that kind of hour (day, night, rest day or public holiday).
- 20 daytime hours on a basic salary of 800 and a total of 1,080 KWD: 130 KWD.
