Short answer

Example: a loan of 12,000 Bahraini dinars over 84 months at a 3.8% flat rate costs 181 Bahraini dinars a month, with 3,192 in total profit; the equivalent reducing rate is about 6.96%. Instalments on all consumer finance obligations may not exceed 50% of gross monthly income; this may be exceeded for those earning more than 3,000 dinars after a documented assessment (CM-5.4.1). The maximum term for consumer finance is 7 years; it may not be extended more than twice or go beyond 7 years from the date of the original facility (CM-5.4.8).

How the calculation works

  • Flat rate: profit is charged on the full amount for the whole term, even as you repay it. Personal loans are usually advertised this way.
  • APR: the annual percentage rate is the true yearly cost on the reducing balance, including fees. Compare offers on APR, not on the flat rate.
  • Salary deduction cap: your instalments together may not exceed a set share of your salary, and the term has a legal maximum. These two limits set the most you can borrow.

Islamic banks call the bank's return "profit" rather than interest; the arithmetic is the same.

Frequently asked questions

How much personal finance can I get on my salary?

The maximum instalment is your salary times the salary deduction cap, minus your existing instalments. The most you can borrow is then worked out over the longest term allowed (84 months in Bahrain). Choose "Maximum loan for my salary" in the calculator.

How much of my salary can go on loan instalments?

Instalments on all consumer finance obligations may not exceed 50% of gross monthly income; this may be exceeded for those earning more than 3,000 dinars after a documented assessment (CM-5.4.1).

What is the annual percentage rate (APR)?

It is the true yearly cost of the loan on a reducing balance, including admin fees. The Saudi Central Bank and the Central Bank of the UAE require lenders to disclose it. The calculator works it out for you from the flat rate and the fees.

How do I convert a flat rate to a reducing rate?

There is no simple formula, because it depends on the term. The calculator works out the equivalent reducing rate exactly. As a rough guide, the reducing rate is close to double the flat rate on short terms.
