How the calculation works
- Flat rate: profit is charged on the full amount for the whole term, even as you repay it. Personal loans are usually advertised this way.
- APR: the annual percentage rate is the true yearly cost on the reducing balance, including fees. Compare offers on APR, not on the flat rate.
- Salary deduction cap: your instalments together may not exceed a set share of your salary, and the term has a legal maximum. These two limits set the most you can borrow.
Islamic banks call the bank's return "profit" rather than interest; the arithmetic is the same.
Personal finance rules in the UAE
- The maximum personal loan is 20 times the monthly salary or income.
- The maximum term is 48 months.
- Total loan and card instalments may not exceed 50% of gross salary, and 30% of the pension for retirees.
- Interest is calculated on the declining balance, and any advert with a flat rate must show the equivalent effective rate next to it.
- Interest may not be deducted upfront from the loan amount.
- Early repayment: The early repayment fee is capped at 1% of the outstanding balance or 10,000 dirhams, whichever is lower.
- Policy rate: The Central Bank of the UAE raised the base rate to 3.9% from 17 September 2026 (secondary source).

Frequently asked questions
How much personal finance can I get on my salary?
The maximum instalment is your salary times the salary deduction cap, minus your existing instalments. The most you can borrow is then worked out over the longest term allowed (48 months in the UAE). Choose "Maximum loan for my salary" in the calculator.
How much of my salary can go on loan instalments?
Total loan and card instalments may not exceed 50% of gross salary, and 30% of the pension for retirees.
What is the annual percentage rate (APR)?
It is the true yearly cost of the loan on a reducing balance, including admin fees. The Saudi Central Bank and the Central Bank of the UAE require lenders to disclose it. The calculator works it out for you from the flat rate and the fees.
How do I convert a flat rate to a reducing rate?
There is no simple formula, because it depends on the term. The calculator works out the equivalent reducing rate exactly. As a rough guide, the reducing rate is close to double the flat rate on short terms.
