Pay and hours
What the law says
Overtime pay equals the basic wage for the overtime hours plus at least 25% during the day and 50% at night (Article 71). The basic wage is the cash pay agreed in the contract plus the periodic increment, without allowances (Article 1).
Normal and overtime hours together may not exceed 12 hours a day, and overtime requires the worker's consent (Article 71). For stocktaking and preparing accounts, the days may not exceed 15 a year unless the competent authority allows more (Article 72).
Night working hours run from 9 pm to 5 am (Article 1). Overtime on the weekly rest day or an official holiday: an amount equal to 100% of the basic daily wage on top of the day's own wage (200%), or one compensatory day off for each day. In emergencies where work may be required without the worker's consent (Article 72), the rates rise to 150% during the day, 175% at night and 300% for a rest day or official holiday. Instead of pay, the worker may be given permission to be absent. A month is 30 days (Article 1), and Article 97 calculates the hourly wage by dividing the wage by the length of the month and then by the number of normal hours, which gives the 30 x 8 divisor. Weekly rest is at least two consecutive days (Article 77).
Labour Law issued by Royal Decree No. 53 of 2023: Article 1 (definitions of night working hours, basic wage, comprehensive wage and month), Article 70, Article 71, Article 72, Article 77, Article 97.
How the calculator works it out
- Hourly wage = the basic monthly salary ÷ 30 days ÷ 8 hours = 3.33 OMR on the example salary.
- Each overtime hour = the hourly wage × the rate for that kind of hour (day, night, rest day or public holiday).
- 20 daytime hours on a basic salary of 800 and a total of 1,080 OMR: 83.33 OMR.
