Moving from Iraq to Oman: what changes
- On $3,000 a month you gain about $549 a month after the move ($6,583 a year), because the deduction rate falls from 18.3% to 0%.
- On $10,000 a month, each extra dollar of a raise loses 0% in Oman instead of 15% in Iraq, so pay rises are worth more after the move.
- VAT rises from 0% to 5%: spending $1,000 a month on standard-rated goods costs about $50 more each month.
- You gain a legal right to an end-of-service gratuity in Oman (about $10,500 after 5 years on $3,000 a month), which no general scheme provides in Iraq.
- Crypto gains: not taxed in Oman; not settled in Iraq.
- Tax residence in Oman: In 2026 there is no tax residence test for individuals, because they pay no income tax. You may also stay tax resident in Iraq if you do not end your residence there. Count your days.
- Iraq and Oman have a double tax treaty (signed, not yet in force, 2025). It decides which country taxes income when both could. Check other treaties.
