  • Calculated annually on a standard 1257L tax code. In practice National Insurance is worked out on each monthly pay separately; the annual result is the same if the salary is steady.
  • Student loan repayments and workplace pension auto-enrolment contributions (usually 5% from the employee within a set band) are not included, because you can opt out of the pension.
  • The Personal Allowance is tapered above £100,000, which is why an effective marginal rate of 60% (or 67.5% in Scotland) shows in this range.
  • The employer contribution does not include the Employment Allowance, which many small businesses claim.

Moving from the UK to Oman: what changes

  • On $5,000 a month you gain about $1,013 a month after the move ($12,154 a year), because the deduction rate falls from 20.3% to 0%.
  • On $10,000 a month, each extra dollar of a raise loses 0% in Oman instead of 40% in the UK, so pay rises are worth more after the move.

  • You gain a legal right to an end-of-service gratuity in Oman (about $17,500 after 5 years on $5,000 a month), which no general scheme provides in the UK.
  • Gains on shares: not taxed in Oman, against up to 24% in the UK.

  • Oman has no inheritance tax, while the UK does (up to 40%).
  • Crypto gains: not taxed in Oman; taxed in the UK.
  • Tax residence in Oman: In 2026 there is no tax residence test for individuals, because they pay no income tax. You may also stay tax resident in the UK if you do not end your residence there. Count your days.
  • The UK and Oman have a double tax treaty (in force, 1998). It decides which country taxes income when both could. Check other treaties.
