Moving from Syria to Bahrain: what changes

  • On $3,000 a month you gain about $583 a month after the move ($6,997 a year), because the deduction rate falls from 20.4% to 1%.
  • On $10,000 a month, each extra dollar of a raise loses 0% in Bahrain instead of 15% in Syria, so pay rises are worth more after the move.

  • You gain a legal right to an end-of-service gratuity in Bahrain (about $7,350 after 5 years on $3,000 a month), which no general scheme provides in Syria.
  • Crypto gains: not taxed in Bahrain; not settled in Syria.
  • Tax residence in Bahrain: Bahrain has no general tax residence test for individuals, because there is no personal income tax. You may also stay tax resident in Syria if you do not end your residence there. Count your days.
  • Syria and Bahrain have a double tax treaty (in force, 2000). It decides which country taxes income when both could. Check other treaties.
